It’s the sixth day of Christmas book ideas, designed to help you find ideas for your own Christmas present list or to get a good book for someone. On the sixth day of Christmas it is… The Great Outdoors.
I love a good book that helps me to understand and interact with the outside world a bit better – and as a city dweller, I perhaps need more help than most. If you want to be able to navigate the world a bit more easily and learn to ‘read the signs’ then
The Walker's Guide to Outdoor Clues and Signs
could hit the mark and help you to see things a bit differently.
If you want to know a bit more about nature then the
RSPB Nature Tracker's Handbook
might help you to understand whether it’s a lion or a domestic cat that you are tracking. This is also a handy
Pocket Guide to British Birds
and I have been known to use this very book myself to try and identify exotic birds in my garden (that normally turn out not to be exotic at all).
You could also read other people’s accounts of the great outdoors, such as
Wild
, whose author walked 1100 miles of the US coast. Or even
Into the Wild
, which is not necessarily the cheeriest of books, but Jon Krakauer (the author) is good at telling difficult and powerful true stories. You could go for something more relaxing though and join Claire Balding on a walk in her book
Walking Home
Or if you like a walk with a ‘purpose’ or as an excuse for other things then you could try one of
CAMRA's Pub Walk
books. I am sure you will have earned the drink and pub meal.
Links to all of the books, along with a few more suggestions are here:
